"I've always been
a dream chaser,
ever since I was a child"

Alessandro Varagnolo

our story

Alessandro Varagnolo's journey began in the bustling heart of Turin, fueled by aspirations and big ideas.

As a child, he was a dream chaser, and as an adult, he fulfilled not only his own dreams but also those of his family.

His passion for the wine industry grew through his career in events, where he forged strong friendships with restaurant owners and wine producers in the Langhe and Monferrato regions.

The turning point in Alessandro Varagnolo’s life came with the passing of his grandfather, a father figure who ignited his connection to his roots. He vividly remembered a family celebration where his grandfather handed him a glass of Moscato, urging him to remember the taste of his heritage. In time, Alessandro’s visits to Langhe and Monferrato became more frequent, and his passion for wine grew despite a promising international career.

Becoming a sommelier and a Langhe Wine Ambassador through courses at the Barolo & Barbaresco Academy, Alessandro was inspired by local producers to pursue his dream of establishing a wine and hospitality business with his family.

For Alessandro, wine is about storytelling, memories, and emotion.

OUR TERROIR

Our traditions:
The Journey of Vigna Vecchia

At Cadgal, our Moscato Vigna Vecchia follows a unique path, deeply intertwined with the white marl soils that define its character. From the vineyard to the cellar, the process respects the land that gives life to our grapes, culminating in a wine that returns to its origins.

OUR TERROIR

Soil Composition

The soils in this region are primarily made up of calcareous marls, rich in sand and limestone, often referred to as "white soils". These light, well-draining soils play a crucial role in producing high-quality grapes.

The sandy component contributes finesse and aromatic intensity to the wines, while the limestone provides structure and enhances longevity, giving the wines a distinct character.

Climate & Microclimate

The continental climate of Langhe and Monferrato is characterized by hot summers and cold winters, with the Alps moderating the extremes. Significant diurnal temperature variations help the grapes develop rich aromatic compounds.

Microclimates vary and allow for a wide range of expressions. Ideal vineyard exposures ensure optimal sunlight, aiding in ripening while preserving natural acidity.

Vines Age

Many of the vineyards in this area boast old vines, some up to 70 years old. In the decades, these mature vines have laid deep root systems that can access essential minerals and nutrients from far below the surface, resulting in wines with greater complexity and depth.

The age of the vines also enhances the concentration of flavors, creating wines of exceptional quality and character.

A Timeless Heritage of Viticulture
in the Heart of Piedmont

The viticultural tradition in the Langhe and Monferrato regions is centuries old, rooted in a culture that honors both land and vine. This rich heritage is evident in the meticulous craftsmanship and quality seen in the wines from this area.

Valdivilla and Calamandrana are integral to the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2014. This designation recognizes the region’s cultural heritage and long-standing viticulture tradition. The interplay of terrain, climate, and human expertise has consistently yielded high-quality wines.

The area’s distinctive terroir, featuring prime soils and climate, makes it a benchmark for fine winemaking, particularly for aromatic whites that encapsulate the local landscape’s essence. The UNESCO recognition underscores the region’s cultural significance, ensuring the preservation of its unique landscape and traditions for future generations.

OUR COMMITMENT

Restorative Agriculture

A concept that involves agricultural practices aimed at restoring soil health, biodiversity, and ecosystem balance.

Unlike conventional agriculture, which often focuses on maximizing yield through intensive use of chemicals and monocultures, restorative agricolture emphasizes sustainability and environmental stewardship.

This approach helps restore the natural fertility of the soil, enhances water retention, reduces erosion, and increases the resilience of ecosystems.

Additionally, restorative agriculture often involves the integration of agroforestry and the use of traditional agricultural knowledge, supporting both the environment and local communities.

The primary goal of restorative agriculture is not only to produce wine but also to regenerate the land and enhance biodiversity. This holistic approach ensures that farming practices are aligned with the natural cycles of the ecosystem, promoting a healthier environment and sustainable food systems for future generations.

SQNPI Certified

Cadgal is SQNPI certified (National Integrated Production Quality System) and is gradually approaching the conversion to organic farming.

Integrated pest control is practiced in the vineyard, which includes a limited use of pesticides – not harmful to the soil, humans, and beneficial insects -, the inclusion of parasite antagonists and sexual confusion.

Fabè:
Our Charity Project

There are events in life that profoundly touch our emotions and friendships, making tangible commitment urgent and essential, something visible in the concreteness that represents memory. The Barbera Fabé is simply this for all of us at Cadgal.

A portion of the revenues from the purchase, production, and sale of Barbera Fabé has already made it possible, in its entirety, to build the “Fabio Costantino” Medical Center in the city of Glei, in the Togolese Republic. Welcomed and supported by the city administration, which is responsible for its management, the center is of vital importance to a basin of nearby towns and villages with a population of over 100,000 inhabitants, who would otherwise be forced to travel over 3 hours to reach another medical facility in the region

The “Fabio Costantino” Medical Center has become an essential resource for the population, and the Ministry of Health of the Togolese Republic has committed to improving accessibility by clearing paths and enhancing the roadways.

It has become an essential commitment for Cadgal to continue supporting the needs for medical personnel, medicines, equipment — often basic necessities such as the already constructed water well.

The country is grappling with social and political tensions – one of the highest infant and maternal mortality rates in Africa – pushes for further strengthening of our commitment to providing ongoing support to the Fabio Costantino Medical Center.
